Kenia | Plätze: 2 | Nr.: C301505016 | Seminartermine

Studienrichtung: Education (Early Child Development), Marketing, IT (Web design), Film making and Environmental Conservation

Vorgeschlagen von: Raphael Otiro Owino, Director, Soweto West Self-Help Group

Sprache(n): Englisch, Swahili recommended

Dauer: 3 Monate

Soweto West Self Help Group (Sosep Nursery School) is a local association working in the neighborhood of Kibera. These  so-called ‘slums’ are the biggest of their kind  in East Africa and located 7 km outside of Nairobi. The aim of the Soweto West Self-Help Group is to improve people´s quality of life, particularly in the communities in Kibera. The association runs a jewelry and handicrafts workshop that provides stable work to support the local community. As an adult education project, it trains youth how to make jewellery as well as non-jewellery items with the objective of earning a living. The workshop also generates funds to run a nursery school, which offers three classes for children of different ages (2-6 years).

GLEN participants will teach preschool children in the nursery school and cooperate with the two employed teachers. They will also support the association in setting up a sustainable network for marketing by identifying and reaching new markets outside of Kenya for the various products from the jewellery and handicraft workshop.

In addition, GLEN participants might also train the staff in how to manage the association’s internet website and pass on general computer skills, or support the organization in expanding its scope of activities (for example sanitation and access to water). During school break, there is also the chance to join environmental projects like tree planting in rural areas.

Basic teaching skills and prior experience in working with preschool children is required. The association is also looking for someone with good internet skills and ideally specific knowledge in web design or how to manage a web shop and its necessary applications. Marketing, networking and promoting skills are also very welcome, as well as knowledge about Fair Trade markets.

The scheduled time for the internship is  from September to November 2012. Training and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English. The tandem will be formed by a hungarian participant and a german/swiss participant.
